2930 Creative: State of the Company

Well team, we did it. We made it through 5 years.

It hasn’t been easy. Not even close, but we’re still here. Recently I said in Slack chat that every day we’re fighting the man just by showing up to work. I truly do believe that.

Carly and I started 2930 Creative as a place for creatives to be in charge. Many agencies rely on creatives to produce the work but cast them aside when it’s time to give credit, promotions etc. From day one we had the vision for 2930 to be the opposite.

For the most part, we have stuck to that vision. Everyone on the team is a creative in some aspect, even if their job isn’t inherently creative. We involve everyone in brainstorms and strategy planning, even if they aren’t working on that account. Keeping everyone on track, including me, isn’t easy but we’ve survived so far.

This core idea was offensive to some in 2012, and still is to some today. Again, every day we show up we are fighting.

However, we have done so so much more than fight in the past 5 years. We have grown every single year in terms of revenue, profitability and team members. So if this is a fight, we are winning.

Of course, that wasn’t the only idea we founded the company on.

Work hard. Be kind. Give back. Create things. These are our other core principles. While they seem like pretty basic ideas now, at the time when we started 2930 Creative those are really the only things we wanted out of a workplace.

Over the past 5 years, we have helped all sizes of non-profits tell their story. We have created so many things that I don’t even remember them all. Within the team and outside of work, all of us try to be as kind as we can. I think work hard goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway: we bust our asses everyday, including some weekends.

In my eyes, we’ve stuck to our motto as close as we could for a new business in its first 5 years and I’m extremely proud of that.

We still have tons of to do. If we slow down or let our guard down, we lose. We do this for each other but also for every creative working a job they hate for 80 hours a week.

We have big plans for the next 5 years and beyond, as indicated by what we’ve launched in this past year. We started expanding outside of being “just an agency” by launching a store and two podcasts. We are looking to grow both of those beyond simple fun side projects and have already started seeing success.

We have also started experimenting with other ways of connecting with our audience through live streaming and new social media platforms. These experiments are vital for us to stay ahead. As creatives, it’s in our blood to try things. We must never stop doing that. Not every idea works, but the ones that do help move us forward.

We are more than just an agency. We are a family and I couldn’t think of anyone else I’d rather be embarking on the next 5 years with.

So thank you all for being the best team I could ask for. I’m so proud of you all and can’t wait to see where we go from here. Here’s to the next 5 years.

Lastly, to those of you who said Carly and I were crazy for starting this business or that we’d never make it past 2,3,4 or 5 years… we’re still here and not planning on leaving anytime soon.

Chris Reeves is the president and co-founder of 2930 Creative and couldn’t be happier at all 2930 has accomplished.
